Reconciliation Begins with Truth
The history and harms of residential schools are not up for debate.
At YWCA BC, we are committed to advancing truth and reconciliation through our programs, partnerships and advocacy.
We are extremely troubled by a continued rise in residential school denialism and acts of racism towards Indigenous communities. We condemn these acts and all acts of hate and intimidation towards Indigenous communities.
Reconciliation requires each of us to learn more and confront the uncomfortable truths about our shared history. Historically accurate and thoughtful resources are readily available to help us better understand the realities of residential schools and the lived experiences of Survivors and intergenerational Survivors. This history is extensively documented through Survivor testimony, government and church records, archival evidence, and the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
As we pursue reconciliation, we stand with Indigenous communities. We honour their resilience, strength, creativity and leadership. We also recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility and are committed to listening, learning and taking action today and in the future.
