About the YWCA

Our Story

YWCA BC is one of the province’s largest and most diversified non-profit organizations and has supported communities for more than 125 years. We first opened our doors in 1897 as YWCA Vancouver, providing housing and services to women arriving in the city in search of education and employment opportunities.

Since then, our programs and services have expanded well beyond Vancouver to communities across the province. To recognize and celebrate this growth, our name has evolved over time. In 2011, we became YWCA Metro Vancouver, and in 2025, we legally changed our name to YWCA British Columbia to better reflect the scope and impact of our work today.

Our Global Roots

The global YWCA movement traces its origins to 1855 in England, when Lady Mary Kinnaird and Emma Robarts established organizations to support women during the industrial revolution. These organizations merged in 1877, and the YWCA movement quickly spread internationally, including to Canada.

Originally known as the Young Women’s Christian Association, the YWCA reflected the values and context of its time. Over the years, YWCAs around the world have evolved to meet the needs of diverse and changing societies. YWCA BC has joined a group of YWCAs that no longer use the acronym; our name is simply YWCA. This change honours our local history while maintaining recognition and trust, and connects us to the broader global YWCA movement advancing equity and social change.

YWCA BC Today

The YWCA today is not a religious or faith-based organization. We are a secular organization, and we welcome people of all ages, genders, religions and backgrounds. We are committed to inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA); gender inclusion; anti-racism; truth and reconciliation and decolonization; and participant-centred approaches that ensure our programs and services are shaped by the voices and lived experiences of the communities we serve.

While we continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of our communities, we remain guided by our overarching vision: a just and equitable world for women, families, and allies.

Timeline

The organization’s original location was a cottage at 633 Homer Street.

YWCA acquired property at Dunsmuir and Burrard, which served as its home base until the mid-90s.

We opened the Pender Y to serve the needs of the Chinese community.

We opened Munroe House, Canada’s first second-stage transition house for women and their children leaving violence.

We opened the doors at the original location of Crabtree Corner in the Downtown Eastside.

YWCA Vancouver changed its name to YWCA Metro Vancouver to reflect our commitment to serving communities throughout the region.

YWCA Metro Vancouver became YWCA BC to align with our strategic priority to expand services beyond Metro Vancouver, where many women and families are seeking more affordable housing and integrated services.

Meeting the needs of a changing community

With each passing decade, we continue to expand our services and reach with innovative programs and advocacy to address the root causes of inequality. In recent years, we have focused on building safe, affordable housing across the region, and have become trusted advocates in the areas of child care, access to justice and women’s economic security and independence.
