A New Beginning: The Impact of the Axis Program

Starting over can be daunting, especially when faced with language barriers and a limited skills set. For many newcomers to Canada, the transition can be especially challenging, as they are faced with navigating a new culture and job market. The YWCA Axis program helps ease this transition for newcomer women who have experienced domestic violence.  

Amanveer* landed in Canada in March 2022 and relocated to Vancouver to escape domestic abuse. Her journey with the Axis program started when a local Neighbourhood House referred her, and during the 12 weeks of the program, Amanveer learned how to navigate the Canadian job market and gained skills to land her current full-time job.  

"Coming to a country where I have no work experience and low English level is hard. I was scared and unsure of my abilities. The moment I spoke to Aman, Career Advisor at YWCA Axis, I felt safe. She spoke to me in Punjabi, which made me feel connected and understood.  She helped me update my resume and understand the Canadian work culture. She also helped me enroll in an online customer service course and even guided me on how to find a doctor. I feel safe asking her questions that I may not feel comfortable asking a stranger. The YWCA Axis program lent me a laptop, so I could participate in the program and attend weekly virtual meetings with my Career Advisor. The 12 weeks have gone by so fast and although I am sad that the program has come to an end, I feel grateful for receiving this support. I have secured a full-time job and I feel like I am an active member of the community.” 

The Axis program is a trauma-informed support system for women. It provides support, guidance, and opportunities for personal growth while helping them navigate their job search. The program accepts participants on an ongoing basis and offers support in English, Punjabi, Farsi or Mandarin.
