From Newcomer to Registered Clinical Counsellor: Anna's Health Connect Journey
When Anna first connected with the YWCA Health Connect program, she was navigating the complex and emotionally demanding journey of rebuilding her counselling career in Canada.
Originally from Ukraine, Anna holds a master’s degree in psychology and brought over eight years of experience working in the insurance sector, where she provided employee counselling support as the Head Technical Officer and Personal Development Specialist. However, despite her extensive background, transitioning into the Canadian counselling profession came with many barriers. Like many internationally trained healthcare professionals, Anna faced uncertainty around credential recognition, licensing requirements, financial pressures and the challenge of gaining Canadian experience while adapting to a new system.
To help her navigate these barriers, Anna joined YWCA Health Connect, an employment program that supports newcomer self-identified women pursue their healthcare credentials in Canada. With support from Health Connect and community partners including WorkBC, she participated in workshops, skills training, English language preparation and employment support services. Funding assistance was also provided for important licensing-related expenses, preparation and examination support.
“The most meaningful part of the program was the consistent support, encouragement and practical guidance I received throughout the licensing process. The program provided motivation during difficult moments and offered valuable financial support that helped reduce stress while I completed my requirements,” shared Anna.
YWCA Health Connect helped to support Anna in strengthening her English language proficiency, connected her to free resources and exam preparation and online, one-to-one coaching support when in-person options became inaccessible due to commuting challenges from Maple Ridge.
While balancing financial pressures, transportation barriers, part-time employment and pregnancy, Anna continued accumulating supervision hours, coordinating documentation and preparing her clinical counselling application with determination and resilience.
Now, Anna has successfully obtained her Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) designation and is employed as a Clinical Counsellor in Canada. Her achievement represents not only professional re-establishment, but also resilience, adaptability and the strength to rebuild a meaningful career in a new country while overcoming significant personal and systemic challenges.
“I am truly grateful for the help and support that the YWCA Health Connect program provided throughout my journey. The support had a significant impact on both my professional and personal development and I am very thankful for the encouragement I received during the process of obtaining my RCC license,” said Anna.
Reflecting on her YWCA Health Connect experience, Anna encourages other newcomers to seek support throughout their professional integration journey.
“Stay persistent and believe in your abilities, even when the process feels difficult or long. Seek support, ask questions and stay connected with programs and people who encourage your growth. Having the right support system can make a huge difference.”
