Finding a job isn't always straightforward, especially if you're fresh out of school. 

For many young people, the challenge isn't a lack of motivation. It's knowing where to start. Many of them struggle with gaining experience, writing a resume for the first time or trying to stand out in a competitive job market. At the same time, the rising cost of living means many young people can't afford to spend months searching for work. 

Career Zone is YWCA BC's youth employment centre in Downtown Vancouver. We provide free employment services for people aged 16 to 30, helping young people build skills, explore career options and connect with opportunities. 

Practical support for every stage of your job search 

Whether you're applying for your first job or preparing for your next opportunity, Career Zone offers personalized support based on your goals. 

Services include: 

• Resume and cover letter support 
• Interview preparation 
• Career coaching and career planning 
• Job search strategies 
• Employment workshops 
• Access to computers and employment resources 

Our employment advisors work alongside participants to identify their strengths, navigate barriers and develop a plan that works for them. 

Employment programs designed around your goals 

Career Zone is also home to several specialized employment programs that recognize every young person's journey is different, because meaningful employment support isn't one-size-fits-all. 

Whether you're interested in learning bike mechanics, gaining work experience, exploring career options or preparing for employment after transitioning out of government care, our programs provide practical training, one-on-one support and connections to employers and community resources. 

Supporting young people where they are 

At YWCA BC, we know this has systemic consequences and impacts. Early work experiences can shape future career opportunities, long-term earnings, confidence and economic security. That's why access to employment support matters. 

Across British Columbia, youth continue to experience higher unemployment than the general population. In June 2026, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 was 12.7%, nearly double the provincial average. Earlier this year, it reached 14.4%, the highest level outside of the pandemic in more than a decade. 

Behind those numbers are young people trying to build a future, gain financial independence and take their first steps into meaningful careers. 

Many young people are also navigating barriers that can make finding work even more challenging. This includes, financial pressures, caregiving responsibilities, unstable housing and ageism. Some young people are looking for their first job. Others are changing careers, returning to work after time away, balancing school with precarious employment or trying to figure out what's next.  

Investing in young people strengthens our communities 

When young people have access to meaningful employment, the benefits extend beyond the individual. Employment can improve financial stability, strengthen mental well-being, build connections and create opportunities for lifelong career growth. Communities and employers also benefit when young people have the support they need to participate fully in the workforce. 

Supporting youth employment isn't just about helping someone find a job today. It's about investing in the next generation of workers, leaders and community members.
